The applique process is the traditional method of producing bespoke sewn flag designs. It requires great skill and involves sewing or appliquéing coloured cloth to the flag to produce the design. Normally the design is traced on to the cloth so that the design appears correctly on the front and in reverse on the back.
We use woven polyester flag for the background of the flag and knitted polyester for the design. Cotton cambric is also widely used but unlike polyester it does tend to rot and degrade on the flag, so this is not used as much as it used to be and we would recommend polyester fabrics for their durability.
Sewn Flags have in many cases been superseded by digitally printed flags but they are still popular because of the high quality sewn workmanship that goes in to a custom appliquéd sewn flag.
